Understanding Adriatic Winds: Bura, Jugo, and Maestral
Understanding wind patterns is fundamental to safe and enjoyable sailing. The Adriatic Sea has three main wind systems that every sailor should know.
The Maestral (NW Summer Breeze)
The Maestral is the sailor’s best friend. This thermal wind builds reliably from late morning, reaching 10-18 knots by afternoon, then dying down at sunset. Perfect for training and leisure sailing.
The Bura (NE Cold Wind)
The Bura is a cold, gusty wind blowing from the northeast, usually in winter but occasionally in summer. It can reach gale force with little warning.
The Jugo (SE Sirocco)
The Jugo is a warm, moist wind from the southeast that can last for days. It builds gradually, bringing overcast skies and swell.
