Mastering Mediterranean Anchoring Techniques
Anchoring in the Mediterranean is an art form. Unlike tidal waters where you simply drop anchor, Med anchoring involves stern-to docking, shore lines, and sometimes crowds of boats.
The Med Mooring (Stern-To)
The most common technique in Croatian marinas is stern-to mooring. You approach the quay in reverse, drop your anchor at a calculated distance, and back up to the dock.
Anchoring in Bays
When anchoring in bays, always check the depth and bottom type on your chart plotter. Sand and mud provide the best holding. A scope of 5:1 is the minimum in calm conditions.
